Farm concrete Rural concreters

Rural Concrete: The #1 way to future-proof your farm

If you’re an Auckland farmer, you know how brutal it is on the ground. Apart from the tractors, feed trucks, and herds moving through, there’s also the weather. There’s plenty of rain most months, then a stretch of sun that bakes the top. Most surfaces just don’t last.

That’s where rural concrete comes in. Farm-grade concrete is made to keep your driveways strong, your feed pads clean, and your yards safe for stock and equipment.

At Blundell Concrete, rural jobs are a large part of what we do. We know exactly what holds up under Auckland conditions because we’ve mixed and poured it ourselves on farms right across the region. In this article, we go over the importance of specialised rural concreting, where you need it most, and the benefits of getting it right the first time.

Why Specialised Rural Concreting is a Must for Kiwi Farms

While standard concrete has its place, it isn’t exactly cut out for farm life. It can crack under constant weight, it gets slippery, and it can wear out pretty fast. Farm concrete is a different beast. It stands up to heavy vehicles, livestock traffic, silage spills, and daily hose-downs, without breaking a sweat.

That’s because farm concrete is purpose-built. The mixes are far tougher than your average driveway pour. On farms, we often use:

  • Fibre-reinforced concrete: This has synthetic fibres running through it that stop cracking and add strength. It’s perfect for dairy lanes, feed pads, and anywhere that cops a hammering from livestock or machines.
  • High-strength concrete: This is specially engineered to manage big loads over the long haul. It’s great for barns, silos, and spots that come under serious pressure.
  • Permeable concrete: This lets water drain through. Using this means wash down areas and yards don’t turn into impromptu skating rinks or effluent nightmares. It can help with your environmental compliance, too.

We can also add acid-resistant agents to these. This can be super helpful if your concrete is likely to be exposed to silage or effluent waste.

Where You Need Farm Concrete Most

Farm concrete can solve genuine problems in some of the busiest, hardest-hit parts of your rural property. Here’s where it typically matters most:

  • Feed pads and silage bunkers: Concrete feed pads keep your cows off muddy ground, so they stay healthier and waste less feed. A purpose-built slab under your silage bunker can cope with loader traffic and stop effluent soaking into your paddock.
  • Farm sheds and workshops: Heavy tractors, fertiliser pallets, and oil spills are hard on any flooring. Farm concrete is far less likely to crack under weight and doesn’t turn into a slippery mess when you’re working on machinery.
  • Dairy yards and holding areas: Dairy yards see a fair bit of hoof traffic, water, and sludge. Strong, textured concrete stops cows slipping and deals well with never ending wash downs.
  • Rural driveways and access roads: A rough metal track typically means lost money and time when trucks get stuck. Concrete driveways give you a clean run all year, with no bogs or ruts to fix.
  • Fertiliser and machinery storage pads: You can’t store bulk fertiliser or park a big spreader on soft ground for long. A rural concrete pad copes with the weight and keeps spills from leaching into your soil.
  • Stock loading ramps: Loading out stock is stressful enough without animals losing their footing. A solid concrete ramp gives stock better grip, manages heavy hoof traffic, and washes down easily when you’re done.

Why Experience Matters for Farm Concrete

A rural concreting job and a backyard patio concreting job are two entirely different things. Farms have very specific requirements. For instance, weight loads, run-off, how stock moves, and what vehicles and machinery are driving over it. A botched job will end up with cracks, low spots that hold water, or surfaces that are slippery and generally unsafe.

It’s imperative to use concreters who know farm work. Only an experienced crew has the know-how to get the mix, steel, slope, and finish right. A professional team also takes care of the whole process, from prepping to finishing. This can save a lot of time and stress on your part.

Doing it properly from the get-go means less patching, less downtime, and safer yards and lanes for your stock and workers. It also safeguards your equipment and keeps your farm moving. In the long run, it pays for itself.
